I admit that this is a strange verse to post so cl

I admit that this is a strange verse to post so close to Christmas. But I just received an email from a friend whose parent has just died. This is the fourth friend I know who has lost their mom or dad in the last two weeks. Not to mention the ones whom I know who are grieving on their first Christmas without a parent, child, or spouse.

With my own dad dying less than two years ago, I feel deep grief for my friends. I know that losing a parent is a grief like I had never experienced before. As I was praying for them, I was thinking that death is so hard - I hate it. But then this verse came to mind, and I realized that it's tied to Christmas. Because the coming of Christ - His life and His death - took away the sting of death.

Every time we sing a song at church with this line in it, I tear up because it makes me think of my dad. I miss him so much, but I have HOPE because I know Dad is with God right now and that I will see him again someday. All because of the birth, life, and death of Christ for our sin.

So as I grieve and as my friends grieve, we do not grieve as those without hope. Death has no sting. Jesus is victorious over it!

Three of my four Bible studies finished our study

Three of my four Bible studies finished our study of the book of Esther last week, and I have been reflecting on what God taught me through it.

The phrase most people associate with Esther is "for such a time as this" - the idea that God puts us in places for a specific purpose at a specific time. And I always love that reminder. But I also came away with so much more from the book of Esther than that.

I think what's most unique about the book is that God is never mentioned, and yet there is no doubt that He is at work throughout the story. That is the lesson that I keep coming back to - that God is always as work, even when I don't see it or when it doesn't feel like it. He is at work keeping His promises on behalf of His people.
